| Okay, you're probably wondering why I'm working with a duo, or a band or anything. Normally, I prefer working alone. Yet, there is Toucan Tango, every Wednesday night at Pirate Key. It's rare. This gig is right out of the Twilight Zone, in that it pretends to be a lot of things, but isn't just one of them. Jimi Banks and I are polar opposites in a lot of things. He's the easy-going party guy, and I'm the classical human statue who has trouble clapping in time with the beat (ironic, since a lot of those beats I actually wrote in my sequences). You might say this is his attempt to get me to lighten up. In any case, the crowds are happy. The music is classic trop rock, with my double tenors trying to stay out of the way most of the time. I bring the flute and flugelhorn. It's hilarious. When you see us up there, just remember that I'm telling myself inside over and over, "Come on, man. You've got to smile more." |
